College Success Framework

College is more than classes, deadlines, and degree requirements. It’s identity, growth, community, and learning how to navigate systems that often feel confusing or inaccessible. This framework reflects the approach I’ve developed over 25 years of supporting students across six campuses — an approach rooted in belonging, clarity, and real‑world support.

My goal is simple: to help you understand how college really works, feel confident in your decisions, and know without a doubt that you belong here.

How the Framework Works

Core Beliefs of This Is College Success

These beliefs guide everything I create and every student I support:

  • Every student who wants to be here belongs here.

  • College is about identity, growth, and community — not just careers.

  • Inclusion and equity are essential to student success.

  • Students deserve to understand the “hidden curriculum” of college.

  • Asking for help is a strength and a skill.

  • Connection is the foundation of belonging and persistence.

  • Struggle is normal — support should be accessible and proactive.

  • Exploration is part of becoming who you are.

These aren’t just ideas — they’re the foundation of how I show up for students.

How I Support Students: The Framework

1. Developmental: Meeting You Where You Are

Every student arrives with different experiences, resources, and levels of confidence. Some need more guidance because of structural barriers; others are ready to advocate for themselves. My role is to understand where you are and support your growth from there — not where anyone else thinks you “should” be.

2. Inclusive: One Size Does Not Fit All

Your identities and lived experiences shape how you move through college. Being a student of color, undocumented, LGBTQIA+, first‑generation, disabled, or navigating any marginalized identity impacts the support you need. Inclusion isn’t optional — it’s essential. If we’re not actively including, we’re leaving someone out.

3. Holistic: You Are More Than Your Classes

Academic success is deeply connected to wellbeing, community, and a sense of belonging. Advising isn’t just about schedules and policies — it’s about helping you feel grounded, supported, and connected to campus resources that strengthen your whole experience.

4. Experiential: "The Answers Are in the Doing, Not The Thinking"

When you’re unsure about your major or career path, thinking can only take you so far. The quickest way to know if something is right for you is to try it. Shadow someone. Volunteer. Interview a professional. Observe a real‑world environment. Experience brings clarity in a way that reflection alone can’t.

5. Connected: Community Is the Key to Persistence

Students who feel connected to their university — through clubs, organizations, campus jobs, study abroad, major‑related groups, or identity‑based communities — tend to thrive and graduate on time. Finding your people isn’t just good for the soul; it’s good for your GPA.

6. Empathic: You Don’t Have to Pretend You’re Fine

Empathy is one of my core strengths. I can often sense when a student is overwhelmed or unsure, and I adjust my approach so you feel safe expressing what’s really going on. Most students think they’re the only one struggling — they’re not. Normalizing your experience and offering support helps you leave with less stress than you came in with.

7. Strategic: There Is Always a Path Forward

College pathways can twist and turn, but they shouldn’t feel impossible. I specialize in helping students see all their options — even the ones they didn’t know existed — so they can make informed decisions and stay on track for graduation. Strategy turns confusion into clarity.

8. Helpful: Support Should Actually Feel Helpful

At the end of the day, advising should feel useful, grounding, and supportive. You shouldn’t be expected to know every policy or procedure. I see myself as a guide — someone who helps you navigate the university with more confidence and less overwhelm.

Why This Framework Matters

College can feel confusing, isolating, or overwhelming — not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because the system isn’t always designed with transparency or equity in mind. This framework exists to change that.

My hope is that as you explore This Is College Success, you’ll feel more clarity, more confidence, and more belonging. You deserve support that meets you where you are and helps you grow into who you’re becoming.

You belong here. And you can do this.
